Qualifying as an accountant in Malaysia

In Malaysia, the word 'accountant' is protected. The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) was established under Accountants Act 1967 as the national regulatory body for accountants in Malaysia. All persons practicing as accountants or auditors in Malaysia must be registered with the Institute.

To become a qualified chartered accountant in Malaysia, you need to pursue one of the following routes:
1) Pass any of the final examination specified in Part 1 of the First Schedule of the Accountants Act, 1967 and gain 3 years of accountancy related working experience in the service of a chartered accountant or in a government department, bank, insurance company, local authority or other commercial, financial, industrial or professional organisation; and/or

2) Be a member of any of the recognised accounting bodies specified in Part 2 of the First Schedule of the Accountants Act, 1967; and/or

3) Pass the MIA Qualifying Examination and gain three years of accountancy related working experience in the service of a chartered accountant or in a government department, bank, insurance company, local authority or other commercial, financial, industrial or professional organisation.
